Biomes:
Expository Report and Poster
Final Due Date:November 12, 2009
We have been studying ecosystems in science and learning about plants and animals that live in different environments (biomes) on Earth. Each student has been assigned a biome on which to report and a list of questions to use in gathering this information. The steps we will take and due dates are:
- Gather information from the school and public libraries and the internet. Students will be given time in class to complete most of their research. I will help students to utilize good research skills when searching for their information. It is essential that students use their time wisely in class or they will have additional work to complete at home.
- Use the gathered information to answer the questions on the BIOME sheet. When students are taking notes from a book or the internet they MUST write them down in THEIR OWN WORDS. The 2 page biome report sheet will be due for me to look at on October 30th. I will not keep the notes; just read them to make sure they are complete and accurate.
- Here is the format for the final biome report:
- Paragraph 1: description of the biome (land and climate; where the biome is located in the world)
- Paragraph 2: a mammal that lives in the
- Paragraph 3: a second mammal that lives in the biome
- Paragraph 4: a bird that lives in the biome
- Paragraph 5: a reptile OR amphibian that lives in the biome
- Paragraph 6: one plant that grows in the biome
- Paragraph 7: a second plant that grows in the biome
- Paragraph 8: a natural resource that humans get from this biome (farmland, oil, minerals, wood, etc)
- Paragraph 9: Identify a change that has taken place in this biome (extinction, populations, decrease in size, people change, animal change)
- Paragraph 10: Conclusion. Wrap up your research report. Do not introduce and new information here. We will learn more about doing this in class.
My goal for students in doing this project are to introduce them to the various environments on Earth; teach them to find good sources; help them understand how to structure a research report; and guide them in completing deadlines on time.
I addition to the report, students will make a poster on a large poster board (please just regular poster board- no science or foam boards). On the poster he/she sill make a diagram of a food web that uses ONLY plants and animals found in their biome. A sample is enclosed to help you. The food web must include the sun, at least 2 producers, at least 2 consumers, and at least 1 decomposer. The plants and animals can be drawn on the poster board or may be cut out of magazines or internet sources. The names of the plants and animals should be neatly written beside the picture and the student should draw arrows to show how the energy flows through the web. There should be a title across the top of the poster and the students name in the bottom right corner.
IMPORTANT DUE DATES:
Outline:October 30th
Final Paper:November 12th
Food Web Rough Draft:November 4th
Final Food Web Poster:November 12th
Final Presentation:November 12th & 13th
The final copy of the paper can be typed or handwritten.
Parents and students, please note that this project is worth 150 points in writing and 275 points in science. It is essential that your child use their time wisely in class and keeps up with due dates. All parts will receive a 10 percentage point deduction for each day late.
